Using a drum sander
A drum sander is basically a big belt sander or quad orbital sander. It is important that you begin with the roughest grit for your project and progress to fine sand paper. Installing the sand paper on the sander is really a two person job so enlist some help to get the belt on tight. Clean the floors first and remove all staples. Use a dust mask and eye protection while sanding. Also if this is your first time using a drum sander consult your rental company for usage. Start at the corners with the sander off the floor and when you place the sander on the floor make sure it moves continuously. After you are done sanding each time, sweeping is recommended. FYI, when dealing with wood it is good to know that fir is softer than oak or maple.
